Understanding NFL Offensive Rankings And Statistics

By Ruthie Calderon

Winning while betting or in fantasy football depends on the accuracy of your judgment of the actual league. NFL offensive rankings will assist you identify how one team will perform against the other. Their attacking tendencies combine with their ability to defend to give an indication of their chances depending on their opposition for the day.

How teams rank depends on their score. Teams that score higher in a game will obviously rank higher than those that fail to score. However, their progress is likely to be hampered by a weak defense. There must be a good balance between scoring and conceding. Allowing your opponents to score means that you will lose points which affects your ranking.

Yard per play indicates the portion claimed by each team during play. Regular winners score higher on this end compared to losers. This is because the winners score more points, first down and eventual wins. Regular losers have fewer first downs and thus a lower score. This struggle with first downs and wins affects the ranking of a team.

A higher First Down does not always indicate wins or more possession. It should be noted that in 2012, the Cardinals were ranked position twenty seven but started with 3-0 first downs. They are however important in determining ranking and eventual strength of a team. They also combine with Rush Attempts to determine the position of a team.

During a bet or fantasy football, go for a team with a better Yard Per Rush rating. This signifies better quality of play. You are advised to be cautious especially when the league is still young. A poor run of form can be deceptive leading to huge losses. Teams have turned tables to post impressive results. It could be a seasonal defensive blunder.

The potential of any team can be determined by its passing attempts in one game and over a period of time. Offenders make the most passing attempts while defenders are reluctant. Beyond the passing attempts, consider the passing yard when determining gaming strength and potential. The possibility of winning with an offender is higher than when dealing with a defender.

Time of Possession gives a better idea of the ability of a team when choosing between a winner and a loser. First downs and the rushing yards are used to determine the time of possession. When making a choice, consider that the opponents could be holding the ball better than your target team or the team they were playing against. This reduces its overall weight.

An average team can become great on the sole basis of Turnovers. Turnover indicates that the team is taking advantage of offenses by their opponents by converting them. Teams with a better strategy and talented players have posted better results when turnovers are considered. Penalties are also used for ranking purposes. The ability of the opponent to break your penalties determines your strength. Before placing any bet or picking a team for fantasy football, consider the above factors.
